Family Ceratophryidae |
This is a small family, 12 species in 3 genera found in South America. The terrestrial species are "sit and wait" predators" that crouch in the leaf litter without movement. When I took video of a horned frog in Guyana the only movement was an occasional flicker of the throat. Some folk call them Paraguay horned frogs.
Lepidobatrachus is an aquatic genus - the three species are sometimes called Budgett's frogs after the scientist who described them.
Members of the family are often found in the pet trade.
