Family Pteriidae

The family Pteridae contains 30 species in two genera. Several genera, including the pearl oysters Pinctada sp. previously included in the Petriidae, have been transferred to the family Margaritidae. Unfortunately most of the information about the feather oysters is about pearl oysters. General information about the family is difficult to come by.

It seems that most pteriids are shallow water inhabitants of tropical and sub-tropical oceans. The two species below are both associated with cnidarians (black corals and sea fans).
