Freelance Activities


Own photographic, writing and consultancy business. Frequent contributor to magazines. Wrote a weekly nature column in the Fiji Times. Have carried out photographic assignments for New Zealand Geographic, International Wildlife, the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the New Zealand Department of Conservation, the BBC, Grenada Television and the Museum of New Zealand. Wrote and illustrated Fiji's Natural Heritage (1988), The Snorkeller's Guide to the Coral Reef (1994) co-published by the University of Hawaii Press, Exisle (Auckland) and Crawford House (Australia), published in Germany by BLV as Schnorchel Führer Korallenriff. Wild at Heart the South Island's West Coast was published by Exisle Publishing in 1994. Fiordland Underwater, New Zealand’s Hidden Wilderness co-authored with Chris Paulin was published in August 1998. Second edition of Fiji’s Natural Heritage with 288 pages and over 550 colour photos was published in May 2000 and translated into Fijian (as Noda Veikabula) by Paul Geraghty. Noda Veikabula was published in 2002 and copies distributed to every school in Fiji courtesy of a grant from Seacology.

Photographer for Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) funded Western Samoa lowland ecosystems survey in 1992. Worked as consultant photographer for the Department of Conservation in Western Samoa under a MFAT project (1993). Major photographic contributor to Rockpool Fishes of New Zealand by Paulin and Roberts (1992). Underwater photographer for Museum of New Zealand’s 1993, 1995 and 1996 Fiordland expeditions. 1993 - photographer for Invercauld Sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands expedition. Commissioned to write article on under-water cameras for Cruising World magazine (1995). Photographer for Profutura (Germany) for Australian chapter in WWF funded book Lifelines (1996). Photographer for Solomon Islands Government World Heritage application for east Rennell Island and the Marovo Lagoon (1996 and 1999) and for the Niue Tourist Office (December, 1996). Wrote and photographed chapter on the Australian aboriginal concept of time for the book Time to Live published by Profutura (Germany) in late 1997. Wrote and photographed guides to Auckland Zoo and Orana Park (Christchurch).

Stills photographer for Sir Peter Ustinov and the Grenada TV production of Mark Twain’s voyages around the equator in New Zealand and Australia in June 1997.

Worked as researcher for TVNZ and fixer for the BBC Natural History Unit. Traveled widely in the tropical South Pacific and Australia.

Keynote speaker at the Fiji Tourism Convention 1992. Have given public lectures for the California Academy of Sciences (April 1996) and at San Diego Zoo, San Diego Natural History Museum and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in October 1996. Keynote speaker at the Pacific Indigenous Conservationist of the Year awards in Salt Lake City (September 1998). First speaker in the McGrath series of lectures by Distinguished Marine Biologists at Long Island University in NY (on Fiordland Underwater) in September 1999.

Mid 1994 until August 1995 worked for Nelson/Marlborough Conservancy of New Zealand’s Department of Conservation providing freshwater and planning advice. Carried out several major environmental consultancies for clients as varied as Timberlands West Coast Ltd., Solid Energy (formerly New Zealand Coalcorp) and New Zealand’s Department of Conservation.

Developed the website www.fiordlandunderwater.com in conjunction with Chris Paulin and www.pacificislandbooks.com.

Denver Zoo souvenir guide was published in 2002 and a guide to the Fort Worth Zoo was published in April, 2003. Paddy is interested in other, similar guides ... so contact him directly if your institution wants a superb quality inexpensive publication.
