Family Agamidae

The agamid lizards are a widely distributed family of over 300 species. Commonly called dragons or dragon lizards they may be a sister group to the iguanids. Typically tropical, they inhabit a wide range of habitats from deserts to rain forest. They are absent from the New World where iguanids fill similar niches and also absent from Madagascar. The water dragon depicted below seeks refuge in rivers and lakes when threatened and can remain submerged for up to 90 minutes.

Several species, including the bearded dragon are commonly kept as pets.
