Ryan Photographic - Carcharhinidae - Requiem sharks
Family Carcharhinidae
The family Carcharhinidae contains 60 species in 12 genera. The derivation of the common name of requiem sharks is debated. I looked up "requiem" and received this definition: "a Mass for the repose of the souls of the dead." So no further discussion needed right? Meet one of these sharks and you are off to meet your maker so to speak. Well that's the popular misconception anyway. Most sharks are extremely shy and tend to stay away from humans. Nearly all attacks on humans are a case of mistaken identity.
Sharks are often referred to in the popular literature as "primitive". I take great exception to this term. First of all ANY organism alive today has been through the same 3.5 billion year evolutionary history with equal bragging rights. Secondly, sharks "got it right" millions of years ago. Equipped with a superb sense of smell and sensitive electromagnetic organs, sharks are the ultimate predator.
