Ryan Photographic - Carpiliidae - crabs
Family Carpiliidae
The family Carpiliidae is one of the smallest crab families with 3 species in one genus. They were previously included with the round crabs (family Xanthidae) but were reclassified to make my life difficult. Well - okay - they were reclassified because of substantial genomic differences. Carpilius corallinus is found in the tropical Atlantic while the other two species (illustrated below) are found in the Indo-Pacific.
Carpilius maculatus and C. convexus often considered to be toxic, were investigated by a former colleague of mine and were shown be toxin-free. A link to the abstract of this paper is here.
