Ryan Photographic - Epialtidae - Spider crabs
Family Epialtidae
There are currently 393 species of spider crab classified into 60 genera. As the common name suggests, the family is typically characterized by their possession of long, spider-like legs, but there are many exceptions. Spider crabs are widely distributed in the world's oceans and several species live in the deep sea. Epialtids are typically herbivores or omnivores and some species will decorate themselves with algae or other sessile organisms.
