Family Falconidae |
Falcons, falconets and caracaras are widely distributed, being found on all continents except, of course, Antarctica. Falcons and falconets are fast-flying predators, typically taking their prey inflight. Indeed, the peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on the planet having been recorded at over 320 kph (200 mph) in a "stoop". Peregrines were pushed to the brink of extinction by DDT and other chemicals which led to eggshell thinning and low breeding success.
Caracaras, while they do take living prey are not averse to scavenging corpses, somewhat reminiscent of buzzards and vultures.
As always, Wikipedia has useful information about the falconidae (which by the way are more closely related to the song birds than eagles and hawks). |
