Family Lygiidae

The lygiids mostly live in coastal rocky shores where they can reach very high densities. Currently, 86 species, in 6 genera, are recognized. Like all the other isopods, females carry fertilized eggs in a brood pouch, the marsupium. Here they stay, until ready to lead an independent existence.

Lygiid isopods are primarily detritivores. Most are fast-moving and when disturbed run for crevices or cracks in rocks at high speed. I assure you they are bloody hard to photograph!
