Family Solenostomidae |
There are only 6 species in one genus in this family but I wouldn't be at all surprised if new species aren't discovered over the next few years - these fish are so cryptic. Ghost pipefish are only found in the Indo-Pacific. The longest species reaches about 16 cm (just over 6 inches). Ghost pipefish feed on small benthic invertebrates and zooplankton. Like the closely related pipefish and seahorses they lack chewing jaws and suck their prey into their mouth. They apparently only move into shallow water for breeding purposes - but no one really knows. Females brood the eggs between their enlarged pelvic fins.
Finding one of these beauties is a real buzz!
