Family Sparidae |
According to FishBase there are 151 species of the Sparidae in 37 genera. The sparids are almost entirely marine and are found in the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They prey primarily on benthic invertebrates, hence most species have grinding molar-like teeth. Many species are hermaphroditic, some possess both male and female gonads, others change sex as they grow. Considered to be excellent eating and provide excellent sport fishing. Some species may be ciguatoxic which is a form of post-death revenge.
